Liquid Filter Cartridges : Principles, Types and Selection Guide (Pullner Filtration)-PART ONE
In modern industrial liquid filtration systems, the liquid filter cartridge is a key component for protecting equipment, stabilizing processes and improving product quality. From ultrapure water and fine chemicals to food & beverage, electronics chemicals and process water, the right liquid filter cartridge has a direct impact on production efficiency and total operating cost.

A liquid filter cartridge is the core filtration element installed inside a filter housing. Under pressure, contaminated liquid passes through the cartridge; solid particles, colloids or microorganisms are retained on the surface or inside the filter media, while the clean liquid flows out from the other side. In this way, the cartridge achieves clarification, fine filtration or even bacteria reduction.
In typical industrial filtration systems, a multi-stage design is often used: pre-filtration, fine filtration and final safety or sterile filtration. Each stage uses different cartridge structures and micron ratings to meet process requirements while controlling overall cost.
The working principle of liquid filter cartridges mainly includes:
Mechanical sieving (surface filtration) – similar to a precision screen; when the pore size of the filter media is smaller than the particle size, oversized particles are blocked on the surface.
Depth filtration – the filter media has a three-dimensional porous structure. As liquid flows through the thickness of the media, suspended particles are gradually captured inside the structure, which provides higher dirt-holding capacity and longer service life.
Adsorption – some filter materials carry charges or have special hydrophilic / oleophilic properties. They can adsorb colloids, organic molecules or very fine particles, improving turbidity and particle levels in the filtrate.

In real applications, these mechanisms usually work together. Proper media design and structure optimization are the foundation of high-efficiency, long-life liquid filter cartridges.
Pullner Filtration focuses on industrial liquid filtration and supplies several main cartridge types to meet different working conditions and industry requirements.
They are classic depth filter cartridges. Made from polypropylene by melt-blown technology, the internal pore size gradually becomes smaller from outside to inside, forming a gradient structure.
They provide high dirt-holding capacity and stable pressure drop, which makes them ideal for process water, circulating water, cooling water and pre-filtration of RO systems. These cartridges protect downstream precision filters while offering very competitive cost performance.
They significantly increase effective filtration area by pleating the media, providing higher flow and lower initial pressure drop in the same volume. Common filter materials include PP, PES, PTFE and nylon, with micron ratings from several microns to 0.1 μm or even sub-micron level. Pleated cartridges are widely used in ultrapure water for electronics and semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and bioprocessing, beverage and beer clarification, and high-end fine chemical processes.
With increasing system flow rates, high flow cartridges have become very popular. These cartridges have larger diameters and much higher flow per element, which reduces the number of cartridges and the size of the housing, saving installation space and replacement time. They are very suitable for high flow process water, cooling water and many large-scale process liquid filtration projects.
String wound cartridges are traditional depth filters. Fiber yarn is wound around a core to form a multi-layer structure. They are robust, have strong pollution tolerance and are suitable for removing sand, rust and other larger particles. They are commonly used in domestic water, general industrial water and low-precision pre-filtration stages.
For high temperature, high pressure or highly corrosive media, Pullner Filtration also offers special cartridges such as stainless steel metal cartridges, stainless steel pleated cartridges, bag filters and chemical-resistant PTFE cartridges. These are used for solvent filtration, gas filtration, steam filtration and other harsh environments. Activated carbon cartridges are widely used for residual chlorine, odor and certain organic removal, and are important for food & beverage and drinking water systems.
