Liquid Filter Cartridges:Principles, Types and Selection Guide (Pullner Filtration)-Part Two
In modern industrial liquid filtration systems, the liquid filter cartridge is a key component for protecting equipment, stabilizing processes and improving product quality. From ultrapure water and fine chemicals to food & beverage, electronics chemicals and process water, the right liquid filter cartridge has a direct impact on production efficiency and total operating cost.
This article is prepared by Pullner Filtration, a factory-based cartridge filter manufacturer in China, to give overseas customers a clear and practical introduction to liquid filter cartridges and help you select the right solution for your application.

When comparing liquid filter cartridges from different suppliers, several key parameters should be carefully checked:
Micron rating – usually expressed in microns (μm), and divided into absolute and nominal ratings. Absolute-rated cartridges provide stricter control of critical particle size, and are recommended for final safety filtration and bacteria reduction.
Size and connection – standard lengths include 10", 20", 30" and 40", with standard and high-flow diameters. End cap styles (such as 222/226, flat end, fin end etc.) and connection types must match your existing filter housings to avoid bypass and leakage.

Media and core materials – PP, PES, PTFE, nylon, glass fiber and others each have their own chemical compatibility, temperature resistance and mechanical strength. Proper material selection depends on the chemical nature and temperature of the liquid.
Max operating temperature and pressure – these parameters determine whether the cartridge can safely work under high temperature, pressure fluctuation and steam sterilization (SIP) conditions.
Dirt-holding capacity and differential pressure performance – they directly affect cartridge lifetime and overall operating cost. Monitoring inlet and outlet differential pressure and replacing cartridges at the recommended ΔP value helps ensure filtration performance and equipment safety.
For overseas engineering companies, equipment manufacturers and end users, liquid filter cartridge selection is a balance between technical performance and economic efficiency.
First, clearly define the filtration goal: Is it pre-filtration, fine clarification or final bacteria reduction? Different goals require different micron ratings, structures and media.
Second, understand the properties of the process liquid in detail: media type (water, solvent, acid, alkali, oil, etc.), temperature, viscosity, pH, solids content and particle distribution. These factors have a strong impact on media choice and cartridge life.

Third, combine required filtration precision, system flow rate and acceptable differential pressure to calculate the number of cartridges and select a suitable housing design. In practice, Pullner Filtration recommends evaluating the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the system instead of only comparing the unit price of a cartridge. A higher-performance cartridge may have a slightly higher price, but longer change-out intervals, lower energy consumption and more stable process operation often result in much lower overall cost.

For industries such as food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, bioprocessing and electronics ultrapure water, it is also important to check whether cartridges meet relevant regulations and certifications (e.g. food contact standards, USP-class-related standards). When needed, Pullner Filtration can provide integrity testing and validation support to ensure process safety and regulatory compliance.
Correct installation and maintenance are essential for reliable cartridge performance. Make sure that cartridge end caps and housing interfaces are fully matched and well sealed. Always install according to the flow direction arrow to avoid reverse installation, which may reduce filtration efficiency or damage the internal structure.

When starting up or changing operating conditions, avoid sudden high pressure shocks. A slow and smooth ramp-up of pressure and flow allows the cartridge to enter stable working condition and decreases the risk of damage.
During operation, use a differential pressure gauge to monitor the pressure drop across the cartridge. As contaminants accumulate, ΔP will gradually increase. When it reaches the recommended change-out value, replace the cartridges or clean and regenerate washable types in time. This helps prevent cartridge rupture and protects upstream equipment and processes.

In the electronics and semiconductor industry, liquid filter cartridges are mainly used in ultrapure water systems, chemical distribution systems and wet process steps such as developing, cleaning and etching. These applications demand extremely low extractables, excellent particle cleanliness and stable micron performance.
In pharmaceuticals and bioprocessing, cartridges are used for WFI (water for injection), process water, intermediates and final product clarification or sterile filtration. Final cartridges are usually integrity-tested before shipment and regularly tested on-site to support GMP compliance and batch-to-batch consistency.

In the food & beverage sector, liquid filter cartridges are used for mineral water, beer, wine, juices and dairy products, providing clarification and microbiological control while meeting food-contact safety requirements.
In fine chemicals, coatings and inks, cartridges remove particles and colloids to prevent coating defects and nozzle blockages. In water treatment and environmental protection, melt blown and high flow cartridges are widely used in process water, circulating water and wastewater reuse systems as key filtration stages.
Although a liquid filter cartridge looks simple, it plays a crucial role in different processes and industries. Pullner Filtration has long been dedicated to the field of liquid filtration and separation, offering complete cartridge solutions from pre-filtration to high-precision final filtration. Through optimized media design, precise manufacturing and strict quality control, we help customers build stable and cost-effective liquid filtration systems.
